Find the right laptop for mobile computing in your truck.
Laptops For Mobile Computing In Your Truck
The laptop you choose for your truck needs to be modern. You need one new enough to handle the specifications of networking cards and cellular internet cards. Generally speaking, $600 - $1000 should be enough.
The main options are -
- Hard Drive Size - bigger the better
- Memory - as of this writing date, no less that 512mb, preferably 1000mb +
- Processer Speed - Faster the better, preferably Intel Dual Core
- Screen Size - 17 inch may be to big to wrestle around the truck. Usually you will be so close to the screen that a large size is not required
- Operating System - Windows Vista is the going standard now, if you can get the Professional version, it's better than home, but you do not need it for all but a few nice features for advanced users. NO LINUX. Linux and it's derivatives are great, but not for Internet Broadband. You need to have extensive knowledge to make Linux work well in a truck. If you're reading this, chances are you do not want Linux.
- Brand - stick to brands that are well know with a minimum of 1 year warranty. HP/Compaq have a nice warranty where they send you the box and pay for shipping
- Accessories for networking, digital camera memory cards, and USB - you will need at least one USB port and a network card slot
- IMPORTANT - find out which cellular Internet service you are going to choose and what the network slot requirements are. They are different, currently most use and Express Card Slot. The express card really sucks as it just falls out of the computer frequently, so if you can get another option, use it. If you can find a laptop in your price with a built in wireless card that connects to the service you want, this is the ideal setup.
- Software - the less the better. What? That's right. All major companies load these things up with junk software, spyware, etc. You have to clean it all out to get the computer running at its full potential anyhow. I'd Rather Drive A Truck can assist you in finding free or low cost alternatives that are better.
Our Laptop Store has some of our recommendations available for purchase at great prices.
If you can afford it, there are laptops designed for rugged use. These are not going to be less than $2,500. They are worth the investment if you have the money. Vibration will kill the standard laptop's hard drive, but the rugged computers are designed for the abuse. Simple running the computer while resting it on a hard surface like the dashboard or steering wheel while the truck is idling is enough to kill the hard drive. Of course, dropping it out of the truck is certain to destroy it, while a rugged one may survive. Keep warranties up-to-date.
I do not suggest long-term warranties on a low price computer. Why pay $200 or more for a 3 year warranty on a $600 computer? By the time the computer is 2 years old, it may be time to upgrade anyhow. Choose wisely on this option.
Where you buy is up to you, but I prefer national chains. If you buy locally owned, you will not get service unless you are at the locality. For some this is ok, and it really doesn't matter after the initial return policy anyhow.
I am looking for computer repair facilities that a truck can get to. If you know of any or own one, let me know and I'll link to you. I will be adding a repair section for those who would like to fix their own. Many problems are simply a matter of fixing it yourself.
Ask other truckers what they are using or contact me with a specific model you're interested in for more advice.
